By: China News
Shanghai’s Hongqiao airport has been approved to build a new runway and terminal building, China Business News reported. The airport, which currently handles the majority of the city’s domestic flights, will be capable of handling 40 million passengers and one million tons of cargo by 2015 when the 3300 meter long, 60 meter wide runway and a 364,000 square meter terminal building requiring a combined US$1.99 billion (RMB13.93 billion) investment becomes operational. Wang Guangdi, vice president of Shanghai International Airport Co (600009 SH), said the city’s two airports were overloaded. Hongqiao airport was designed to handle 9.6 million passengers a year but it handled 19 million in 2006. The two airports are expected to handle 110 million passengers and six million tons of cargo by 2015. Earlier reports said China would spend US$64.42 billion (RMB450 billion) expanding its airport networks. The country will have 244 airports by 2020, up 97 on 2006.
